What to Do with 18M Illiterate Youths?

Functionally illiterate--it's when you have poor reading and writing skills that make you unable to cope with daily life and employment tasks beyond basic levels. If you can't read you can't solve math problems. Perhaps, you can read simple sentences and understand basic vocabulary, but struggle with more complex texts or tasks. So you have difficulties in areas like understanding medication instructions, reading food labels, buying things and managing money, or comprehending legal documents.

Recently, the Department of Education said there are probably 18M high school grads (or more) suffering from functional illiteracy, and we wonder how they managed to finish high school or how they'd deal with college. This needs serious looking into, but more needful is what we're going to do with 18 million illiterate youths? The problem is already there. How do we help them?

Give Them Other Specializations

Someone said we can channel them to other careers or vocations that do not need literacy, like those that rely on manual skills than literacy. But they'd be tied up to blue collar jobs with little to zero chances for job promotion. Everyone should have access to a better job status or quality of life. And I can't think of any job that does not involve some literacy skills. Like, we all have to be able to tell time.

Even house helpers, baby-sitters, construction workers and the like need to read product labels and do some math. I once saw a sitcom where an illiterate boy helper was able to buy items from a grocery store because his boss drew on paper the things he needed to buy. The problem is if the boss can't draw things accurately and the helper mistakes one item for another different thing?

Whether you are a working woman or out to have brunch with the ladies, this Chingu bundle is definitely for you! A favorite amongst classy ladies, this bag exudes a feminine and elegant appeal.

Online Remedial Classes

While doing jobs requiring only manual skills, the high school they came from should offer FREE online remedial classes devoted solely for improving their reading, writing and math skills. Some kind of a follow-up schooling. Or perhaps the government can provide them, via Tesda maybe? After passing the course and given a certificate, they can do other better-paying jobs or businesses that involve more than basic literacy.

Literacy all starts with reading and comprehension. And then phonetics. Then writing. With reading and comprehension, math will be made easier. This is why reading is so important, especially today when majority of young people prefer watching videos and movies than reading books. You also analyze thoughts and ideas when watching videos but not like the analytical skills demanded when reading. The mind and imagination are stretched a lot more when reading books. According to the Professional Leadership Institute:
Reading on the other hand is interactive. You have to form mental pictures and focus on translating shapes on a page into ideas in your mind. The medium makes you a stronger, more disciplined thinker regardless of the content.

While the same source says of watching videos:

Video is usually disjointed pieces of mental flotsam floating through cyberspace. This format feeds and exacerbates your monkey mind; that part of your brain that chatters and swings from idea to idea with no pattern or discipline.

Reading is the Answer

The 18 million functionally illiterate youths must be helped with basic reading and then inspired to read books. This is the first remedy. Provide them easy access to online reading modules, interview them online to assess their progress, and give them literacy certificates after passing the interview. Then strongly encourage them to make reading a lifetime habit. How? By making reading rewarding. Like, assigning them more books to read, pass interviews that assess their comprehension and speaking skills, and get advanced certificates which will give them chances for job promotions.

Interviewing them online on the books they have read and basing their grades on how they express themselves literately will definitely save the functionally illiterate from a doomed future. DEPED can schedule 15-minute online interviews for willing participants. This way, the 18 million or so young people can be helped a lot to make up for the loss.

Walking Blog for Self Improvement

It's not a blog that walks by itself. It's about blogging the thoughts that pop up during your long, meditative walks alone---especially alone with God. And to my mind, nothing works more powerfully for self-improvement than humbly pondering on life and its meaning while enjoying a leisurely long walk, being aware that God is there walking beside you.

The Lord says there is nothing better than
to walk humbly with HIM.
[Micah 6.8]

Deep thoughts rise to the surface when we walk and reflect. But they seldom linger and quickly melt into oblivion with time, often even after a few minutes. They may come back but usually not after a long while. So, it's best to blog about them right after the walk. .

Photo above by Jad Limcaco on Unsplash.

Long walks offer a unique opportunity for self-reflection, allowing the mind to wander, process thoughts, and gain clarity. Pairing this experience with blogging amplifies the benefits by transforming fleeting realizations into concrete insights. Writing about your thoughts, realizations, and meditations during these walks serves as a tool for self-improvement in multiple ways.

First, blogging provides a structured space for self-awareness. As you walk, your mind unearths ideas and emotions that may have been buried beneath daily distractions. Documenting these reflections forces you to articulate them clearly, deepening your understanding of yourself, of life and eventually, of God. Over time, patterns emerge—recurring thoughts, emotional triggers, or evolving perspectives, bible passages reappearing in mind—helping you track personal growth.

Second, blogging enhances mindfulness. During long walks, you are immersed in your surroundings, fostering a present-moment awareness that allows new insights to arise. Writing about these experiences reinforces mindfulness by encouraging you to recall the sensations, thoughts, and emotions tied to your journey. Or the whispers or gentle proddings of the Holy Spirit. This practice strengthens your ability to stay present in everyday life.

Third, blogging instills discipline and accountability. By committing to writing regularly, you cultivate the habit of self-reflection and intentional growth. Reviewing past entries allows you to assess progress, recognize achievements, and set new self-improvement goals. It also helps you see how God has been quietly working in your life.

Finally, blogging creates connection. Whether shared publicly or kept private, your words hold meaning. If you share your journey, others may resonate with your thoughts, offering support or sparking discussions that deepen your own understanding. Even if you write solely for yourself, revisiting past entries can provide motivation and insight.

Ultimately, blogging about your thoughts while walking transforms aimless contemplation into an intentional practice. It strengthens self-awareness, mindfulness, discipline, and connection—powerful pillars for personal growth. By integrating writing with walking, you harness the power of reflection and action in tandem, accelerating your self-improvement journey.

If Jose Rizal Were a Blog Writer Today

"Blogging" a century before probably was diary writing. A blog is really a "log" or entry in a personal journal or diary, and Rizal was fond of doing that. A definition I saw on a website says, "A blog is essentially an online journal or diary where individuals or groups can share their thoughts, experiences, or expertise."

You write a diary for keeping a record of your life and how life was at a particular time, planning to leave this for posterity to read, especially your descendants. A blog, especially a personal blog, is pretty much the same thing, only it's online and can be read by millions around the world. Rizal would have loved the idea.

If José Rizal were a blog writer today, I think his writings would likely reflect his love life (first of all), and then intellectual depth, passion for social justice, and commitment to uplifting the Filipino people. He would use his blog as a platform for awakening national consciousness, exposing societal injustices, and encouraging Filipinos to embrace education, unity, and civic responsibility. Would he blog to bash people he didn't like or use it to campaign himself for a seat in politics? Umm, I don't think so. Here are some themes he might explore:

1. National Identity and Filipino Pride

Rizal’s writings often emphasized the importance of national identity. His blog would likely delve into discussions on Filipino heritage, language, and culture, urging readers to appreciate and preserve their roots. He might write about the significance of using Filipino as a language of intellectual discourse, just as he advocated for it during his time.

2. Education as the Key to Progress

A strong advocate for education, Rizal would use his blog to empower young Filipinos by sharing insights on lifelong learning, self-improvement, and knowledge as a tool for liberation. He would likely publish articles promoting free access to education and criticizing systems that hinder the intellectual growth of the poor.

3. Social Justice and the Fight Against Corruption

Not exactly malign individuals in politics, or attack people maliciously, but Rizal’s blog would not shy away from addressing government corruption and social injustice. He might write investigative articles exposing abuses by powerful figures, calling for transparency in governance, and urging citizens to actively participate in political reform. Much like his writings in La Solidaridad, his blog would serve as a voice for the oppressed.

4. Global Perspectives on Filipino Progress

Since Rizal traveled extensively, he would likely compare the Philippines' progress with other nations, highlighting best practices that Filipinos could adopt. His blog would serve as a hub for critical analysis on how the country could achieve social and economic growth, drawing lessons from countries he admired.

5. The Power of Art and Literature

Rizal understood that literature could shape national identity and spark revolution. He would likely post modern-day essays exploring how literature, films, and digital media influence the Filipino psyche. He might also share reflections on the responsibility of bloggers, vloggers, social media praactitioners, Tiktokers, writers and artists in shaping public consciousness.

6. Health and Well-Being

Since Rizal was a physician, he might dedicate part of his blog or FB page or Youtube channel to public health, offering medical advice, discussing common illnesses, and advocating for healthcare accessibility---probably even commenting on Philhealth, diabetes and dialysis, big pharma, intermittent fasting and OMAD. His posts could encourage Filipinos to prioritize mental and physical well-being, recognizing the link between a healthy citizenry and a prosperous nation.

7. The Role of Youth in Nation-Building

Believing that, “The youth is the hope of the nation.” Rizal's blog would inspire young Filipinos to take leadership roles, engage in activism, and contribute to the country’s future. He might even collaborate with young thought leaders, featuring guest blogs from students, entrepreneurs, and social advocates. And probably, he too may be tagged as a communist for doing so.

8. Militate for the West Philippine Sea

I'm sure Rizal would fight for Philippine soverignty over its territorial waters and lambast China for its infringement on our territorial rights and outlandish claims. But he will strongly advocate for diplomacy in everything, ruling out war and violent confrontation with China, although his stand on the Philippines being a province of Spain would probably make him vacciliate on the Philippines-China issue as well.

Ultimately, Rizal’s blog would be thought-provoking, fearless, and educational, serving as a digital extension of his revolutionary spirit. It would ignite discussions, challenge complacency, and encourage Filipinos to take action toward a brighter future. If Rizal had a blog today, would you subscribe?

How Cocoa Drink Improves Your Blog Writing

Want to know why I love cocoa drink? Why I often order a small pot of hot chocolate drink when relaxing at French Baker, courtesy of a friend (sometimes I settle for Milo and other chocolate malt drinks with less sugar enhanced with stevia when at home)? And don't forget sugar-free black chocolate bars.

Cocoa, the key ingredient in chocolate and cocoa drinks, is more than just a tasty treat. Its rich composition of nutrients and micronutrients offers significant cognitive and emotional benefits, which could help enhance your writing ability (especially personal blog writing), spark creativity, and uplift your mood—three essential elements for producing compelling and inspired blog articles.

Flavanols

First, cocoa contains flavanols, powerful antioxidants that improve blood flow to the brain (very important for motorists prone to road rage). Enhanced cerebral blood flow facilitates better oxygen and nutrient delivery, boosting brain function (best for people with "saltik sa utak"). Improved cognitive performance allows for sharper focus and clearer thought processes (a must-have for folks die-hard for politicians this election season), enabling writers to articulate ideas more effectively and stay mentally engaged during lengthy writing sessions. Shoutout to volggers who spread fake news.

Theobromine

Another vital compound in cocoa is theobromine, a natural stimulant similar to caffeine but milder. Theobromine promotes alertness and combats fatigue, helping personal blog writers remain productive without the jittery side effects of coffee. Pair this with caffeine, which cocoa contains in smaller amounts, and you've got a combination that supports sustained energy and mental clarity—ideal for tackling complex writing projects or brainstorming creative concepts. BTW, theobromine also improves kidney health.

Watchout for my coming ebook.

Magnesium

Cocoa is also rich in magnesium, a crucial mineral for brain health. Aside from boosting the immune system, magnesium helps regulate neurotransmitter activity, which plays a role in memory and learning processes. Writers often rely on their ability to recall information and apply knowledge to create compelling narratives or persuasive arguments. Magnesium's influence on these functions can be particularly helpful.

Trytophan

Moreover, the amino acid tryptophan in cocoa contributes to the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that enhances mood and emotional stability, making you a happy, positive blog writer. Writing can sometimes feel daunting or stressful, but cocoa's ability to boost serotonin levels can foster a sense of calm and positivity. This mood-enhancing property may help writers tap into their imagination more freely, creating an environment conducive to producing inspired work.

Endorphins

Lastly, the interplay of cocoa’s nutrients contributes to an overall sense of well-being. The pleasure derived from consuming a cocoa drink releases endorphins, which stimulate feelings of happiness and relaxation. A positive and relaxed mindset is fertile ground for creativity, allowing ideas to flow and flourish.

Enjoying cocoa drinks while doing your blogging routine is like adding a creative elixir to your toolkit. Beyond its delectable flavor, cocoa’s combination of flavanols, theobromine, magnesium, tryptophan, and mood-enhancing endorphins can help writers sharpen their cognitive skills, boost imagination, and elevate their spirit—all key ingredients for producing brilliant (and humorous) writing. So, sip away and let the creativity unfold!

Mastering Personal Blogging to Elevate Your Facebook Presence

For bloggers looking to amplify their Facebook presence, integrating personal blogging with strategic social media practices can be a game-changer. Here are some basic tips to help you harness the power of personal blogging to enhance your Facebook presence:

Craft Compelling Content: High-quality content is a must. Create posts that are informative, entertaining, and relatable. Share your unique perspective and insights, and ensure your writing is engaging and easy to read. Use storytelling techniques to captivate your audience and keep them coming back for more.

Know Your Audience: Understanding your target audience is crucial. Conduct research to identify their interests, preferences, and pain points. Tailor your content to address these needs and create value for your readers. Engaging with your audience through comments and messages can also provide valuable feedback and help build a loyal community.

Leverage Visuals: Visual content is a powerful tool to grab attention and enhance engagement. Incorporate high-quality images, infographics, and videos into your blog posts. These visuals can be shared on Facebook to attract more viewers and drive traffic to your blog. Additionally, using visually appealing thumbnails and captions can increase the likelihood of your content being shared.

Promote Your Blog on Facebook: Use your Facebook profile, pages, and groups to promote your blog posts. Share snippets or teasers of your content with a link to the full post. Utilize Facebook’s features, such as Stories and Live videos, to give your audience a behind-the-scenes look at your blogging process. Engage with your followers by asking questions, starting discussions, and responding to comments.

Optimize for SEO: Search engine optimization (SEO) is essential to increase the visibility of your blog. Use relevant keywords, meta descriptions, and tags to optimize your posts for search engines. This will help drive organic traffic to your blog and, subsequently, to your Facebook page. Regularly updating your blog with fresh content can also improve your SEO ranking.

Collaborate with Influencers: Partnering with influencers in your niche can expand your reach and introduce your blog to a broader audience. Collaborations can include guest posts, interviews, or co-hosting Facebook events. Influencers can share your content with their followers, driving more traffic to your blog and Facebook page.

Analyze and Adapt: Regularly analyze your blog and Facebook metrics to understand what works and what doesn’t. Use tools like Google Analytics and Facebook Insights to track your performance. Adjust your content strategy based on these insights to continuously improve your engagement and reach.

---
