I thought of this blog, Slog Bhop, to help folks who know nothing of personal blogs as I didn't back in 2003. I decided to devote it to personal blogging and writing tips (and related topics) and experiences. Back in 2003, I was fascinated by what I heard about the internet and was curious what it looked like, more so what websites actually were. And I hadn't heard about blogs yet.
I thought that looking at the internet was something like how astronauts in outer space saw the earth and websites were like moons floating or revolving on a background of pitch black space, because I heard experts connecting it to "cyberspace." So I thought it was some kind of a solar system.
Or something like a Star Wars or Star Trek special effect--a big mothership gently but ominously sailing through space with fine, impressive hi-tech mechanical details. When I heard folks saying, "Hey, I saw your website on the internet," I thought you could actually see the person waving at you on the Net live. At the time, I haven't heard of social sites yet, even Facebook.
So when I finally saw the net I was disappointed. "That's it?" I remarked.
When I saw impressive websites and learned how they could reach lots of people around the world, I immediately dreamed of being able to make one for myself. I didn't want to just have my own website; I wanted to be able to make them myself. But how? I didn't even know how to create an email from yahoo or gmail. I wasn't fond of technology or anything digital. But the dream stayed in my mind. Later, when I learned basic website making and also knew about blogs, I preferred personal blogs right away.
I have been a writer since college and a few years out of college I started writing books. But it was costly to publish them and difficult to have them published in dailies--though I was a news feature writer of the Associated Editors which was based in Manila. So when I heard of the nature of websites and blogs I saw an opportunity to be published and read by people all over the world! And for so minimal a cost at that.
It was then I determined to learn how to create a website, and especially a personal blog site, though back then I saw that it was a long shot, if not far out. Me, create a website? How? I didn't know where to get web and blog tips. No Blog Shop sround.
So I tried it out with free websites and blogs, of course. My first attempts were ridiculous. For instance, when I tried my first blogspot I thought that after posting one article I had to create a new blog for another article. And I panicked when I couldn't go back to the article for editing after publishing it because I didn't know what buttons to click. See how hard it is if there are no web and blog tips available around?
It took harrowing months and lots of experiments to finally get used to website creation. Now, I can create websites--free or paid--no matter what hosting. But I like creating personal blogs better. They are simpler to do, easier to manage, easier read by people, easier to promote. And I am very comfortable with just having free blogs, although I have owned lots of paid ones before. I think I want to buy 3 blog sites again. Hmm. Maybe tomorrow?
Anyway, that's why I thought of Slog Bhop--for basic web and blog tips plus my anecdotal experiences along the way which I think will help first timers and the uninitiated a lot. Even those who can't imagine themselves building websites and blogs. Are you a writer or photographer or small businessman? You will have a more rewarding career with blogs and websites.
